Yesterday I went to dad's school to help his unpack and set up his room. As most of you know, Carbon Hill has a knack for being involved in natural disasters. The highschool was burnt down in 2002-ish and the Middle School and Elementary School were demolished by a tornado a short while after. From that point on, they've been having school in portables (or more aptly, especially around here, 'trailers'). Its the most redneck thing I've seen in a while.
At any rate, between the insurance money and I'm sure some tax dollars, they found the moola to build a brand new (and most definately improved school). Sunday was the first day teachers were allowed to come in the building so its crunch time. Students were supposed to come back today but it was postponed until Monday so the workers and teachers alike can get things in order. There was a wheelbarrow and shovels in the girls room yesterday and trash pretty much everywhere. Props to the construction team, its been a long road to this (almost) finished product.
Dad really needed a little help so I volunteered for a few hours yesterday. Mostly I unpacked things, cleaned things, set up and organized. Today I'm in charge of bulletin boards since dad seems to have an aversion to them. Its fine. Its a taste of the teacher world that I'll be apart of in, what, 2 or 3 years? I was even asked twice yesterday if I was a teacher. I was totally flattered and started stuttering around because I was so taken aback. Its weird. I'm at that age where I can pass for anywhere between 17 and 24.
I go the idea to make dinner last night so I did. I love, love, love falafel so I made it last night with saffron rice and tomato and cucumber slices on the side. It was delicious....at one point when we were all sitting down about to eat I said, "We're a typical middle-eastern family!" lol. Good dinner though. AND here's the best part: I had music on when I was cooking when dad came home and he said, "Is this Matthews?" (because he has this mental block where he can never remember that his name is Dave Matthews) and it undoubtedly was--Two Step, in fact. He actually liked the music and said that I should keep it on during dinner. I'm winning him over...slowly.
Danny got back last night from his trip to visit his sick uncle and aunt (who is not sick). When he got back home he was running errands and didn't put his seatbelt on. He noticed a cop do a U-Turn to pull behind him so he snapped it on. When the cop stopped him, he had actually stopped him for the lack of a seatbelt so Danny got a ticket for that, not having his insurance card with him and still having dealer tags on the car. Its actually pretty funny. And the tickets were only about 10 or 15 each so its not like he's out hundreds of dollars. I always fought with him to wear his seatbelt...that shows him.
Mexican food with Joanna in celebration of her b-day (which was yesterday) today! And I'm treating myself to the new Nickel Creek. I can't resist it.
